Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3 completes first flight, moving closer to certification

The Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3 prototype has completed its first flight, opening the next phase of testing toward FAA certification.

The Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3 has completed its first flight. Textron Aviation announced the milestone on 29 July 2026, marking the next stage in the development of its new light business jet. The initial sortie provided an opportunity to verify key systems and prepare the prototype for a broader flight-test campaign ahead of FAA certification.

CJ3 Gen3 first flight: nearly two hours of testing

The prototype departed from Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport in Kansas with test pilots Steve Helmer and Dave Welbrock at the controls. During the flight, which lasted nearly two hours, the crew focused primarily on checking cockpit software functionality and aircraft systems.

The Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3 reached 41,000 feet — approximately 12.5 kilometres — and a maximum indicated airspeed of 278 knots, or about 515 km/h. These figures describe one specific test mission rather than the aircraft’s complete operational performance. The wider envelope will be validated as the programme progresses.

Garmin G3000 and Emergency Autoland in the new Citation

One of the CJ3 Gen3’s most significant developments is the evolution of the proven Garmin G3000 avionics platform. The integrated flight deck is designed to make flight management more intuitive, while Garmin Emergency Autoland adds another layer of protection for pilots and passengers.

If a pilot becomes unable to continue the flight, Emergency Autoland can take control, select a suitable airport and bring the aircraft to an automatic landing. Textron Aviation says the Gen3 improvements were also shaped by feedback from owners, pilots and passengers. The objective is to combine straightforward operation with the capabilities expected in modern business travel.

Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3 range, payload and cabin

According to the manufacturer, the Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3 will offer a maximum range of 2,040 nautical miles, or approximately 3,778 kilometres. Maximum payload is listed at 2,135 pounds — around 969 kilograms — while baggage capacity is 1,000 pounds, or roughly 454 kilograms. Standard seating accommodates up to 10 occupants.

The published maximum range suggests that the CJ3 Gen3 will be capable of serving many European routes without a fuel stop. Actual range on any mission will depend on factors including passenger numbers, baggage weight, weather, required fuel reserves and airport conditions. The balance between range, payload and operating efficiency is intended to remain a defining strength of the CJ3 family.

Inside the cabin, the design includes swivel seating, configurable RGB accent lighting and modern connectivity options. A naturally lit lavatory is also part of the layout, with optional premium features available. The programme therefore combines new cockpit technology with a refined passenger environment.

The full Citation Gen3 family is now in flight testing

The CJ3 Gen3 milestone means that all three next-generation Citation light jets — the CJ4 Gen3, CJ3 Gen3 and M2 Gen3 — have now entered flight testing. Textron Aviation is moving into a comprehensive CJ3 Gen3 test programme designed to validate aircraft performance and systems and provide the evidence required for FAA certification.

A first flight is an important milestone, but it does not complete the development process. The Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3 must undergo further testing and regulatory assessment before entering service. Textron Aviation did not announce a specific certification or delivery date in its release.
